Anti-Wrinkle Injections
This is a very popular treatment worldwide for treating lines and wrinkles due to its excellent results and well established safety profile. Anti-wrinkle injections involve injecting botulinum toxin, using a fine needle, into the target muscle to temporarily block the nerve signal, resulting in weakening of the muscle action which can result in an improvement in the appearance of the lines of facial expression. Botulinum toxin can only treat lines of expression (dynamic lines). Lines that are present when the muscle is not contracted, and the face is relaxed (static lines) generally do not improve with anti-wrinkle injections. However, there may be other treatments that can help with these.
The most popular areas to treat with anti-wrinkle injections are the upper facial areas such as the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and the corners of the eyes.
Other treatments that can be carried out with botulinum toxin include: relaxing the downward pull of the muscles around the eyebrows to create an eyebrow lift; reducing the appearance of gum showing when smiling (gummy smile); relaxing the creases at the top of the nose (bunny lines); relaxing the downward pull of the muscles at the corners of the mouth; relaxing the muscles around the lips to soften smokers lines and make the lips look more full; jawline slimming by reducing the strength of the masseter muscle in the jaw; and underarm treatment to improve the appearance of underarm sweating.
The procedure itself is virtually painless and will not cause any significant distress or downtime. The effects of the treatment start to be felt usually within 48 - 72 hours, but can take up to 14 days to see the full effect. You will be required to attend a follow up appointment 2 - 3 weeks after the initial treatment, if you would like your treatment to be reviewed.
The effect of the treatment usually lasts between 3 - 4 months and will vary from person to person. Fine lines can disappear, deep lines will be softened and may take several treatments until optimum results can be seen. You should have further treatment at no less then 12 week intervals and should wait until the muscle activity returns but not before the lines and wrinkles have had the chance to re-establish.
